number9dream is the second novel written and published by David Mitchell. It was published in 2001 and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.

The novel is set entirely in Japan and takes places over a seven-week period between August 24 and around October 6, 2000. The main character is Eiji Miyake, a 20-year old man who is looking for the father he never knew, in Tokyo.

Plot synopsis Edit

On August 24, 2000, Eiji Miyake is spending his first afternoon in Tokyo. Around 1:30 p.m., he is having a coffee in Jupiter Café, mentally preparing to pay a visit to Akiko Katō, who works for the law firm Osugi and Bosugi in PanOpticon, the office tower across the street.
