In an elaborate fantasy sequence in the novel number9dream, Eiji Miyake introduces himself to Ice Maiden as Ran Sogabe, a “Goldfish Pal” who has come to PanOpticon to service the aquarium of the law firm Osugi and Bosugi. In this way, he hopes to gain access to the offices of Osugi and Bosugi and confront his father’s lawyer, Akiko Katō. In the lobby of PanOpticon, Ice Maiden scans his toolbox and notices some unusual objects. Sogabe answers that they are “newly imported from Germany.”
